Program FR02: French Dance Film Retrospective – Alain Platel

Les Ballets de-ci de-là (110min, 2006, Belgium/Flanders/France)
dir. Alain Platel

In this documentary, Alain Platel celebrates the essence of the peculiar human characteristics which have been fuelling the work of Les Ballets C de la B for the past 20 years. Who are the dancers of Les Ballets C de la B? Where do they come from? And how do they transcend the world on stage? An emotional voyage, filled with impressions which allow us to share a artistic and human adventure. The film is a winner of 2007 IMZ award.

Alain Platel was born in Ghent, Belgium, 1959. In his childhood, he trained at the Mime studio of Marcel Hoste and also at the classical ballet scool. In 1984 Platel founded Les Ballets C de la B. He is notorious for working with both professionals and amateurs. As a member of the collective Alain Platel constantly re-invents his own role – at times he is a performer, at times–choreographer, at times–artistic director. Les Ballets C de la B became world renowned with an eclectic, almost surrealist mixture of modern dance, theatre, circus and music.
