Program R4: Choreographer’s
Corner – Alain Platel
VSPRS
Show and Tell (72 min, 2006, UK)
dir. Sophie Fiennes
Acclaimed
Belgian choreographer Alain Platel has never shied away from
shocking audiences. And his latest work, VSPRS is his most
outrageous yet -- one critic calling it "the weirdest,
most shocking and provocative dance performance you will ever
see." The dance, made up of ten dancers and ten musicians,
is performed to Claudio Monteverdi’s ‘Marian Vespers’,
one of the most important works in the history of European
religious music. The artists trained by immersing themselves
in images of psychiatric distress, and together carve out
an extremely physical and graphic performance immersed in
religious and sexual imagery. In Sophie Fiennes’ mesmerising
documentary, the dimensions of ecstasy and trauma that form
the core of the performance are masterfully captured, and
filmed conversations between Platel and his dancers bring
an extra layer of insight and intimacy to the performance.
Sophie
Fiennes began making films in 1998. She is widely acclaimed
for her unique observational eye and strong sense of cinematic
form. Fiennes often employs a collaborative approach to filmmaking.
She has worked with artists and thinkers ranging from dancer/choreographer
Michael Clark to philosopher /psychoanalyst Slavoj Zizek.
Her films therefore also act as powerful portraits of some
of today's most iconic individuals. Sophie Fiennes' films
have screened theatrically, on television and in festivals
around the world, including Sundance, Telluride, Locarno,
Toronto, Rotterdam. Edinburgh, Sydney and London. In 2000
she was awarded a NESTA fellowship to support her innovative
approach to film making.
Alain
Platel, director and choreographer, is best known for his
pioneering work with the internationally acclaimed Belgian
companies "Les Ballets C de La B" and "Victoria".
He founded Les Ballets C de la B in 1984, and since then the
dance and theatre collective has forged a reputation for giving
powerfully theatrical dance performances.
